Jim Schmehl is the principal attorney with The Schmehl Law Group. Jim moved to Fort Collins in 1979. He worked as a construction superintendent and project manager in residential and commercial construction for 14 years before deciding law was his passion. He attended Colorado State University and graduated summa cum laude, with a major in Economics, focusing on damages assessment. Jim received his JD from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1995 and set up practice in Fort Collins.
Jim has an exceptional perspective on construction law due to his construction background. He uses his experience to understand the needs of clients who are building custom homes or dealing with defects after construction. Jim provides cost effective representation to contractors and subcontractors in all areas of construction law, including arbitration and litigation. He enjoys representing injured employees in Workers’ Compensation matters as well as victims of employment discrimination. Jim has experience as class action lead counsel worked on the Exxon Valdez litigation as an economist while still in law school, has appellate court experience, and is admitted to practice in Colorado and Wyoming in Federal and State Courts.
Consistent with his desire to help victims of wrongful conduct, Jim represents people who have suffered serious injury, regardless of the whether the injury is physical or financial, arises from an auto accident, a defective product, fraud, or breach of contract.
